If you are choosing between Gemini vs ChatGPT for marketing work, the short answer is this: pick Gemini if your team lives in Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Drive, or if you want video generation bundled in. Pick ChatGPT if you want the broader set of work tools (projects, custom GPTs, scheduled tasks, apps) and Microsoft Office add-ins. Both have a free plan, so test each on your own tasks before paying.
This is a comparison of what each tool offers according to the companies’ own pages, not a test of output quality. Prices below are US prices as of October 2026 and can vary by region and billing cycle.

Plans and pricing
Google AI plans
Google sells Gemini through Google AI plans, which bundle storage and other Google perks. Per Google’s US pages:
- Free: $0. Gemini 3.6 Flash, varying access to 3.1 Pro, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems, and 15 GB of storage.
- Google AI Plus: $4.99/month. 2x the usage of Free, video generation, 400 GB storage, Gemini in Gmail.
- Google AI Pro: $19.99/month. 4x the usage of Free, Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Sheets, 1,000 Google Flow credits, 5 TB storage.
- Google AI Ultra: from $99.99/month (5x Pro limits), or $199.99/month (20x). Adds the Deep Think reasoning mode and the highest limits (Deep Think availability varies by country).
Note the price for Pro is the same ballpark as ChatGPT Plus, but you also get 5 TB of Google storage, which matters if you already pay for storage.
ChatGPT plans
OpenAI’s pricing page lists Free, Go, Plus and Pro for individuals, plus Business and Enterprise for organizations.
- Free: unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, plus limited image creation, voice, deep research and uploads.
- Go: $8/month in the US, per OpenAI’s pricing page and Go launch post. More messages, uploads and image creation than Free, and longer memory. OpenAI says this plan may include ads. Go pricing is localized in some markets.
- Plus: $20/month. Adds advanced reasoning models, expanded deep research and expanded access to ChatGPT Work. The pricing page lists projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs in this tier, and Go’s help page also lists them, subject to limits.
- Pro: three monthly tiers, $100, $200 and $500. Adds Pro reasoning, maximum deep research and unlimited image creation. Only the $500 tier includes Ultrafast.
- Business: Standard seats are $25/user/month billed monthly or $20 billed annually. Premium seats are $125 monthly or $100 annually. Two paid seats minimum.
Most marketers will land on Google AI Pro or ChatGPT Plus. For a comparison of the lower ChatGPT tiers, see our ChatGPT Go vs Plus guide.
Current models
Both companies use branded model families that change often, so treat names as a snapshot.
Gemini’s free plan runs Gemini 3.6 Flash with varying access to Gemini 3.1 Pro. Paid plans give more access to 3.1 Pro, and Ultra adds the Deep Think reasoning mode.
ChatGPT’s pricing page lists GPT-5.6 Luna on Free and Go (Go’s help page says its reasoning option uses GPT-5.6 Luna and does not include GPT-5.6 Sol). Plus adds the GPT-6 family and GPT-5.6 Sol, and Pro adds Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra. OpenAI notes that model availability changes during rollouts, so use the model picker to see what your account has.
We are not ranking output quality here. If quality on your own copy and data matters, run the same brief through both free plans.
Research and web search
Gemini has Deep Research on the free plan. Google describes it as an agentic feature that browses up to hundreds of websites and, if you choose, your Gmail, Drive and Chat, then writes a multi-page report. You can also upload your own files. Google lists competitive analysis and due diligence on a sales lead as example uses, which suit marketers.
ChatGPT has web search on every plan, including Free, with citations you can open. Deep research is limited on Free and Go and expanded on Plus, and Pro has maximum deep research. OpenAI also warns that search results and citations can be incomplete or wrong, so open the source before you publish a claim. The same is true for any AI research tool.
The practical difference: Gemini’s research can read your Google files, ChatGPT’s can use connected apps on higher plans. For competitor research that mixes the open web with your own planning docs in Drive, Gemini has the more direct route. For research reports that you want to turn into ChatGPT marketing workflows, ChatGPT’s projects and scheduled tasks help.
Image and video generation
Gemini’s image model is called Nano Banana. Google says it can render clear text inside images (logos, posters, invites) and resize one visual into many formats. Image generation is on the free plan.
For video, Google says Gemini Omni replaces Veo in the Gemini app. It creates 10-second videos with native audio, can turn up to five photos into a video, extend scenes and edit video by chat. A Google AI subscription is required, and features vary by tier and country.
ChatGPT’s pricing page lists image creation on every plan: limited on Free, more on Go, more complex and accurate on Plus, and unlimited and faster on Pro. We did not find video generation listed on that page, so we are not claiming either way beyond that.
If short video clips for ads or social posts matter, Gemini has the clearer bundled offer. For heavier video work, dedicated tools usually go further. See our best AI video generator for marketing list.
Integrations: Google Workspace vs everything else
This is the biggest practical difference.
Gemini is built into Google’s apps. Google AI Plus includes Gemini in Gmail, and Pro adds Docs and Sheets. For teams, Google lists Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Meet within Workspace plans, with Business Standard at $14/user/month with a one-year commitment ($16.80 on flexible monthly billing) in the US. Google says Gemini only retrieves Workspace content that the user already has access to.
ChatGPT works across tools rather than inside one suite. OpenAI lists Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets extensions (limited on Free and Go, included on Plus and expanded on Pro), apps that connect to internal tools on Plus and Pro, and custom GPTs and projects. Business seats also include Company Knowledge and agent features.
If your files are in Google, Gemini is less friction. If your team uses Microsoft Office or a mix of apps, ChatGPT’s extensions and apps fit better. If you want a Microsoft-native assistant instead, see Microsoft Copilot and our Copilot vs ChatGPT comparison.
File and data analysis
Both can analyze uploaded files. On ChatGPT, file uploads and data analysis are limited on Free and included from Go upward. Plus and Pro add interactive tables and charts. Go’s help page says its higher limits cover file uploads and data analysis.
On Gemini, Deep Research accepts uploaded files, and Google’s plan pages describe usage limits as multiples of the free plan (2x, 4x, up to 20x). The pages we read don’t give file-size limits, so check the Gemini app for your plan.
For spreadsheet-heavy reporting, the deciding factor is usually where the data lives: Sheets (Gemini) or Excel and exports (ChatGPT).
Privacy and training-data settings
Personal accounts.
- Gemini: with Keep Activity on, chats are saved and used to improve Google’s services, and a subset is human reviewed. You can turn it off, delete past activity and set auto-delete (default 18 months, or 3 or 36 months). Google still keeps chats for 72 hours with it off.
- ChatGPT: Free, Go, Plus and Pro show “opt-out available” for training. Turn off “Improve the model for everyone” in Data controls. Temporary chats are not used to train models and may be kept up to 30 days for safety.
Business accounts.
- Gemini in Workspace: Google says content is not human reviewed or used for generative AI model training outside your domain without permission, and prompts are not shared with other organizations. Admins set retention.
- ChatGPT Business: OpenAI says it does not train on your workspace data.
Do not paste client data into a personal account of either tool. Use the business plan, and have your admin check the settings and your client contracts.
