Claude vs ChatGPT for Marketers: Which One Should You Pay For?

Claude vs ChatGPT for marketers: plans, prices, models, projects, research, image generation and data settings compared from official pages.

If you want a short answer to claude vs chatgpt: pick ChatGPT if you need image generation, a cheaper entry plan and a wide range of built-in tools in one subscription. Pick Claude if your work is mostly writing, long documents and research, and you don’t need an image generator. Both cost $20 a month at the standard paid tier, and both have free plans. Test your own prompts on the free versions before you pay.

This guide compares Claude and ChatGPT using only the vendors’ own pages, checked in October 2026. We haven’t run head-to-head tests, so we don’t rank output quality. We describe what each plan includes and who it suits. For the wider field, see our AI assistants category.

Claude vs ChatGPT pricing and plans

Claude plans

Claude’s pricing page lists five tiers:

  • Free: $0. Chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation, code execution, memory, app connections and artifacts.
  • Pro: $17 per month billed annually, or $20 per month billed monthly. Adds Claude Code, Claude Design, Slides and Docs, Claude Science, Projects, more Claude models, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365, scheduled tasks and more usage.
  • Max: from $100 per month, billed monthly only. Everything in Pro, with 5x or 20x usage options, higher output limits, early access to new features and priority access at peak times.
  • Team: Standard seats at $20 per month annual or $25 monthly. Premium seats at $100 annual or $125 monthly, with 5x more usage than Standard.
  • Enterprise: $20 per seat per month plus usage at API rates, billed annually. Adds SCIM, audit logs, role-based access, custom data retention, spend controls and a HIPAA-ready option.

ChatGPT plans

ChatGPT’s pricing page lists Free, Go, Plus and Pro for individuals, plus Business and Enterprise:

  • Free: unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna (subject to abuse guardrails), with limits on uploads, image creation, voice and deep research.
  • Go: $8 per month, billed monthly. More messages with tools, more uploads, more image creation, more voice chats and longer memory. OpenAI says this plan may include ads.
  • Plus: $20 per month, billed monthly. Adds GPT-6 reasoning models, expanded deep research, memory and context, Projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs, plus expanded Codex and ChatGPT Work access.
  • Pro: three tiers at $100, $200 and $500 per month. Pro 500 includes Ultrafast; the other two do not. OpenAI says new Pro 200 subscriptions come with a lower usage allowance than before.
  • Business: Standard seats at $20 per month annual or $25 monthly, Premium seats at $100 annual or $125 monthly, for teams of 2 to 200 people.
  • Enterprise: custom pricing through sales.

OpenAI states there is no annual billing for Go, Plus or Pro. Only Business and Enterprise have annual plans.

The pricing takeaway: at $20 a month the two are level, and Claude is $3 cheaper if you pay annually. The real difference is in the tiers around Pro and Plus. ChatGPT has a cheaper $8 Go step and a $500 top tier. Claude goes from free to Pro to Max. If you are weighing ChatGPT’s lower tiers, read our ChatGPT Go vs Plus comparison.

Models

Anthropic’s docs list four current models: Claude Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 4.5. Anthropic describes Opus 5.5 as the starting point for most workloads and Fable 5.1 as the pick for demanding reasoning and long-running agent work. Sonnet 5.5 is described as the best combination of speed and intelligence. Which of these you can pick inside the Claude app depends on your plan, and Anthropic’s pricing page only says Pro includes “More Claude models.”

On the ChatGPT side, the pricing page names GPT-6 models on Plus and above (GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna), alongside the GPT-5.6 family. Free and Go get GPT-5.6 Luna. OpenAI’s Go help page says Go does not include GPT-5.6 Sol. Model lineups change often, so treat any list, including this one, as a snapshot.

For marketers, the practical point is simple. The stronger models on both sides sit behind the paid plans, and Free is fine for testing but not for daily work.

Writing quality and brand voice

We haven’t tested either tool, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What the official pages say:

  • Claude: Anthropic’s model docs describe its models as suited to “rich, human-like interactions” and say you can steer length with your prompt. Anthropic’s privacy page also mentions “custom styles” and conversation preferences as part of the product, so you can set a way of writing and reuse it. Projects let you store brand guidelines and past copy as project knowledge and add instructions that apply to every chat in that project.
  • ChatGPT: OpenAI lists Projects and custom GPTs on its paid plans, which you can set up with your tone and rules. Memory is longer on paid plans.

Both can hold a brand voice if you give them examples. Which one writes closer to your voice is something only a trial on your own copy can answer. Our AI writing tools roundup covers dedicated tools if you need more than a general assistant.

Long documents and context

Anthropic’s API docs list a 1M-token context window for Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5, and 200K for Haiku 4.5. That is the developer platform, though. Anthropic’s pricing page lists the context window for every Claude plan, Free included, as “Up to 1M, varies by model.” It doesn’t say how many pages that is in the app, or which model you’ll be on, so check on a real file.

OpenAI is more explicit. Its pricing page lists these figures:

  • Instant models: 27K total context on Free, 54K on Go and Plus, 128K on Pro.
  • Reasoning models: 256K on Go and Plus, 400K on Pro. That is roughly 320 pages of input on Plus and 680 pages on Pro, according to OpenAI.

OpenAI notes the space for your input is smaller than the total window, because instructions, memory and reasoning also use it.

If you regularly feed in long reports, transcripts or research packs, check both on a real file from your own work. Don’t decide from context numbers alone.

Projects and artifacts

Projects. Both have them. In Claude, a project holds a knowledge base of uploaded files plus custom instructions for all chats in that project. Anthropic’s help center says projects are available to all users, with free users capped at five. Team and Enterprise plans can share projects with view or edit permissions. On ChatGPT, the pricing page lists Projects and shared projects on every plan, with expanded projects on Pro.

Artifacts and the work surface. Claude’s artifacts are standalone pieces Claude creates, such as a document, deck, dashboard or small interactive tool, that open beside the chat and can be edited, published and shared. Anthropic says artifacts are on all plans. Docs, Slides (exportable to PowerPoint or PDF) and Design templates are in beta on paid plans only. ChatGPT’s closest listed features are interactive tables and charts (Plus and Pro), Sites (Plus and Pro) and ChatGPT Work, which OpenAI says acts across your apps and files. We didn’t find an official page on ChatGPT’s canvas editor during this check, so we leave it out.

Web search and deep research

Both tools search the web on every plan, including Free.

For longer jobs, Claude has a Research mode on paid plans (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise). Anthropic says it runs multiple connected searches, reaches across the web and your connected apps, and returns a cited report in minutes. Anthropic also warns that research can use up your limits faster than normal chats.

ChatGPT offers deep research on every plan, but limited on Free and Go and expanded on Plus. Pro has the maximum allowance.

For competitor scans or market summaries, both can do the job. The difference is limits: check how much research your plan actually allows.

Image generation

This is the clearest gap. ChatGPT includes image creation on Free (limited), Go, Plus and Pro, with a “thinking” image mode on Plus and Pro, and unlimited, faster creation on Pro.

Claude does not generate photos or illustrations. Anthropic’s help center says so directly. It can produce diagrams, charts and interactive visuals in the chat using HTML and SVG, and it can analyze images you upload. If you need ad creatives, social graphics or product mockups from a prompt, Claude is the wrong tool for that step. See our best AI image generator guide for dedicated options.

Integrations and connectors

Claude supports app connections, including custom connectors built on the open MCP standard. Anthropic’s help center says custom connectors are available on all plans, with Free limited to one. On Team and Enterprise, owners must add them for the organization first. Anthropic warns that custom connectors can reach services it hasn’t verified, so connect only trusted servers.

ChatGPT lists plugins on all plans, apps that connect to internal tools on Plus and Pro, and Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets extensions (limited on Free and Go, fuller on Plus, expanded on Pro). The Business plan lists connections to Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub and Microsoft 365.

If your team lives in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, check the exact connector you need on each vendor’s page before you buy.

Data and privacy settings

  • Claude (Free, Pro, Max): Anthropic says it uses your chats and coding sessions to improve its models if you choose to allow it. It also may use conversations flagged for safety review. Its pricing page lists model training as “Opt-out” for these plans, so check the setting in your account. Incognito chats are not used for improvement. Raw content from connectors such as Google Drive is not included, though anything you paste into the chat can be.
  • ChatGPT (Free, Go, Plus, Pro): OpenAI says it may use your content to train models, and you can turn off “Improve the model for everyone” in Data controls. Temporary chats are not used while they stay temporary. If you give thumbs up or down feedback, the whole conversation may be used even after you opt out.
  • Business plans: OpenAI says it does not train on ChatGPT Business or Enterprise inputs and outputs by default. Anthropic says its commercial plans fall under separate commercial terms; its consumer-training article does not cover them.

For client work, use a team plan or switch off training on a personal one. Either way, avoid pasting confidential client data into a personal account.

Choose Claude if…

  • Most of your work is writing, editing and summarizing, and you want project knowledge and saved styles to keep a voice consistent.
  • You don’t need an image generator inside your assistant.
  • You want to pay annually for a small discount ($17 a month on Pro).
  • You want Research and artifacts, including Docs and Slides, on a $20 plan.
  • You want Incognito chats and a clear model-improvement setting. Check your privacy settings either way, since defaults can change.

Choose ChatGPT if…

  • You need image generation in the same app as your writing.
  • You want a cheaper step below $20 (Go, $8) or a much larger top tier (Pro at $100 to $500).
  • You want custom GPTs, scheduled tasks, sites and Excel, Word and PowerPoint extensions on one plan.
  • You want published context limits you can plan around.
  • You’re comparing against other assistants too. Our Gemini vs ChatGPT guide covers that match-up.

Many marketers will end up with both: ChatGPT for images and tool breadth, Claude for long-form writing and research. Both have free plans, so run the same three real tasks through each before you commit. Frequently asked questions

Can Claude generate images like ChatGPT?

No. Anthropic's help center says Claude does not generate photos or illustrations like dedicated image tools. It can build diagrams, charts and interactive visuals with HTML and SVG, and it can analyze images you upload. ChatGPT includes image generation on every plan, with limits on Free.

Is Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus cheaper?

Claude Pro is listed at $17 per month billed annually or $20 per month billed monthly. ChatGPT Plus is $20 per month, billed monthly, with no annual option. The monthly price is the same, and only Claude offers an annual discount.

Which one is better for long documents?

Anthropic's pricing page lists the context window as up to 1M tokens, varying by model, on every Claude plan, and its API docs list 1M tokens for its top current models. It doesn't publish per-plan page counts. OpenAI lists 256K tokens of reasoning context on Go and Plus and 400K on Pro. Check your own plan before relying on either for very long files.

Do Claude and ChatGPT train on my chats?

Both may use consumer chats to improve their models, and both have a setting for it. Anthropic says Claude Free, Pro and Max chats are used if you choose to allow it (and if a chat is flagged for safety review). OpenAI says individual-plan content may be used and offers an opt-out. Business and Enterprise plans on ChatGPT are not trained on by default.

Is there a team plan for each?

Yes. Claude Team has Standard seats at $20 per month (annual) or $25 (monthly), and Premium seats at $100 (annual) or $125 (monthly). ChatGPT Business has the same seat prices on the same billing terms.

Can I use both?

Yes, and many marketers do. Both have free plans, so you can test your own prompts on each before paying for either.
